General Discussion
I was really kinda shocked when Sophie drifted out of the books. Like, they were all lovey over eachother and then-poof-she is not mentioned until her death. I am glad that Zanna was introduced, but does anyone else think that she never got what she deserved in the book? Like, I think that she should have been killed in the midst of their relationship (if she had to be killed) and then Zanna came in. It's like, they just broke up. I kind of wanted her to really be expressed more.
So in The Fire Eternal we know that Liz was close to death when she was stabbed with an obsidian knife while the dragons were locked in the Dragon's Den. Later, when she is recovering, we discover that Gwillan, one of her special dragons, had shed his fire tear. Also, Gwilana had found the obsidian knife-point (it had broken into pieces when thrown away) with dark fire concealed inside it.
In Dark Fire it is repeatedly said that the dark fire within the obsidian knife-point had resulted from Gwillan shedding his fire tear upon it. However, this scene of Gwillan crying his fire tear onto the obsidian knife-point was NEVER depicted or described in The Fire Eternal or any of the other books. As far as we know, Gwillan was nowhere near Liz, Lucy, or the obsidian knife - he was locked in the Dragon's Den with everyone else.
Because of this one detail, I now cannot read or even think of reading The Last Dragon Chronicles.
I feel betrayed by Chris D'lacey. He failed to give us one crucial scene. And it wasn't even because he wanted it to be unclear or mysterious, for he makes it blatantly obvious in the next book. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love The Last Dragon Chronicles, but as an avid reader who loves books and the stories within them, I feel robbed when a secret is kept and then revealed not even with a discovery or a flashback but as a 'fact' with no proof or previous 'helpful hints' and yet is made out to be something you should already have known.
And yes, I know this is a little bit bold of reaction when it comes to small details, but this wasn't a small detail. It was a major crucial point. If it hadn't happened - which it didn't if you only read The Fire Eternal - then the Darklings might never had become animated and the Ix wouldn't have reached any goals they had as soon as they did or came close to reaching.
If you'd like to disprove my claims or attempt to restore my faith in Chris D'Lacey, you're certainly welcome to. In fact, I encourage it. One day, I would certainly like to reread The Last Dragon Chronicles without dreading Dark Fire and its contents.
