A Fire Tear is a spark of fire inside every dragon. It acts as the dragon's soul, essence, or life force. If a dragon sheds its Fire Tear, it will die (unless it uses its unnatural eye). A dragon may shed its fire tear because of extreme sadness or fatal wounds (or, as it is said in Dark Fire about the last 12 dragons, a dragon can shed its tear willingly) and they will return to the clay (Gaia) unless something stops the tear from landing on the ground. If a tear lands on the ground, it will created powerful sparks called Fraas. If it isn't returned to the ground, the dragon will turn to stone. David Rain and his special writing dragon Gadzooks almost experienced this in The Fire Within. Gadzooks becomes upset since he feels like David doesn't love him, and sheds his Fire Tear. David returns it to Gadzooks, who is restored.

Dragons always have one eye with a defective tear duct. If they shed their Fire Tear through this eye, not all of the fire will be let through. This allows the dragon to enter stasis before reawakening many years later.

The most commonly referred to Fire Tear is Gawain's Fire Tear.
